November is, as we all know, Diabetes Awareness Month. Young Leader from Bahrain, Khadija, took this opportunity to launch TeamD – a team of young people (diabetics and non-diabetics) who understand diabetes and want to support the diabetes community in Bahrain. TeamD aims to create a comprehensive and sustainable diabetes eco-system in Bahrain, addressing education, awareness, support and advocacy. One of their key focus points is to prevent the stigma’s concerning diabetes and prevent discrimination towards the people who have diabetes, and the people at risk. Through TeamD these young people strive to become the public face and the ambassadors of diabetes advocacy across Bahrain.
Since the launch of TeamD, its members have been very active and much progress has been made. On WDD they supported the Bahrain Diabetes Society in organizing awareness raising events in Health Centres and shopping malls all over Bahrain and the lighting up of important buildings in blue, like the Bahrain Financial Harbor, to celebrate this important day.
On 16 November the Bahrain Round Table, a society for young professional men, organized the VIVA Bahrain Marathon Relay with approximately 150 teams and in total 2,000 athletes for a 48km race. As the Bahrain Round Table recognised the importance of raising awareness of diabetes, TeamD was welcomed to organise a stand to give out information leaflets about diabetes and prevention of this disease. Additionally, the TeamD members supported by the Bahrain Specialist hospital performed blood sugar testing by 170 unique individuals. Several individuals discovered they had alarming blood sugar levels. These people were given more information about their levels and got a coupon for a more accurate check-up at the hospital. At the end of their first successful event TeamD formed a human blue circle to show their aim to bring together young individuals fighting for the same cause.
To conclude the successful Diabetes Awareness Month in Bahrain, a new website (http://www.diabetes.bh) was launched on 20 November. Thanks to the hard work of Hisham and Tariq, two members of TeamD, the website now contains everything you need to know about diabetes and the diabetes community in Bahrain, including a directory for hospitals, blogs of people with diabetes, news, and events. Basically diabetes in a click!
