Friday, November 22nd, 2013; Bahrain National Holdings (BNH) organized the BNL Walk 4 Life walkathon with co-operation from the Bahrain Diabetes Society. The event took place 8 days after the World Diabetes Day and it was held in Dohat Arad by the Bahrain National Airport.
The Event which kicked off at 4pm in a lovely bright, sunny yet breezy afternoon consisted of a three kilometer walk across the park, followed by a raffle draw. Participating in the walkathon came with a small fee of BD 3.000 which would later go to the Bahrain Diabetes Society to start pump therapy for children with diabetes. Participants were also given a free blue (The International Diabetes Federation associates the color blue with diabetes) T-shirt, and were automatically entered in the raffle draw.
Over 160 participants were at the starting point of the walkathon and started to walk the park’s three kilometer course. Participants’ age groups ranged from young children to senior citizens from both genders, all of whom successfully finished the three-kilometer walk.
Community helpers from RCSI’s mobile unit were there to pass out educational leaflets on diabetes, as well as water bottles for the participants to replenish and rehydrate and tart Granny Smith apples for them to munch on.
As the sun was setting, an hour after the start of the walkathon, the participants gathered around the finish point and rejoiced in completion of the walkathon. This was shortly followed by the raffle draw which gave prizes consisting of BD 50.000 Eidiya (monetary giveaways during Eid) from BNH as well as a Samsung Note smartphone and an iPad mini.
Facts About Diabetes:
There are currently 371 million people living with diabetes, as well as 280 million people at risk of developing the disease. By the year 2030, it is expected that half a billion people would be living with diabetes around the globe. Diabetes causes 5 million deaths and costs $ 470 Billion in global healthcare expenditure on an annual basis. In Bahrain, 23% of the population is diagnosed with diabetes whilst another 26% are undiagnosed diabetics. That is to say that nearly half the population is affected with diabetes, which is why it ranks 9th in diabetes prevalence around the world.
These above facts are reason enough for organizations such as BNH to take the initiative in raising awareness of the disease. Another organization raising awareness through a similar walkathon is Al Rashid Group Initiative; which organized a 3 km walk this Saturday, November 30th, 2013 in Dohat Arad at 4pm. The participation is open for all at no charge. Members from Diabetes.bh will also be participating in that event.
